What are Fabric Beads?
- Soft texture. Unlike glass and metal beads, fabric beads are soft and lovely to the touch.
- Lightweight materials. Textile beads are great for larger decorative pieces and accessories, because they won’t weigh anything down.
- Variety of textures. The category includes beads made from textile cord, fabric-covered beads, and models in felt, cotton and wool.
Fabric beads are a great choice when you want the finished piece to have a different texture and feel from standard jewellery in hard materials. Many models have a stringing hole, while others can be sewn or glued on as decoration to all kinds of surfaces.
Eco Art idea from EM ART:
Can’t find the colour or style of fabric bead you’re after? Make your own from offcuts of old clothes, accessories or fabric. Wrap the fabric around a firm core, or shape the bead entirely from fabric. You’ll get one-of-a-kind colours and combinations, and give unwanted clothes a new life.
Fabric Bead Shapes, Sizes and Materials
- Shapes: rounds, discs, ovals, eggs, flowers and all kinds of figures for jewellery and themed projects.
- Sizes: from small details of around 6 mm to larger decorative pieces of around 60 mm, depending on the model.
- Holes: roughly 2 to 8 mm. Choose the right size of thread, cord or string to match the hole of the bead you’ve picked.
- Materials: textile, cotton, wool, felt and nylon. Some models are fabric-covered beads.
Fabric beads for Jewellery Making, Charms and Decoration
- Jewellery. Use fabric beads for bracelets, necklaces and earrings with a look that’s out of the ordinary.
- Seasonal charms. Perfect for children’s charms, little bracelets and decorative pieces to pin onto clothes and shoes.
- Dolls and figures. Fabric round beads could make great eyes, buttons, doll’s clothes and other details.
- Textile wall hangings and accessories. Depending on the model, they can be sewn on or used as decorative elements in textile projects.
- Festive decorations. Ideal for Christmas and Easter projects, cards, invitations, garlands and other seasonal decorations.
Fabric Beads DIY Ideas
- A decorative doll. Use rounds and small fabric pieces for the head, eyes, buttons and other details.
- A textured card. Add suitable fabric embellishments to a card base for a colourful raised effect. Or make a greetings card entirely from fabric!
- Themed and festive decorations. Mix different colours and shapes for garlands, toys and small decorative pieces.
DIY Christmas Craft:
Cotton balls are perfect for DIY Christmas snowmen! Pick three balls in suitable sizes, add a hat and scarf of your choice (you can make them from fabric offcuts) and you’re done. Add your snowman to the Christmas decorations at home, or give it to someone special.
What do fabric beads go with?
Fabric beads pair naturally with yarn, ribbon, felt, wood and leather. For contrast, add a few metal or glass elements.
For jewellery, try leather and suede cords, or wooden beads for a more natural combination. For an extra accent, take a look at our metal spacers.
For decorative projects, choose a suitable craft glue, or sew the pieces straight onto the fabric where the model’s design allows.
