What is Embossing?

Do you like how embossing looks and wonder how this effect is achieved? If you’ve ever come across materials related to this art, you surely know about the beauty and luxury they offer. If you haven’t heard about this type of embossing before, now is your chance!

What is embossing?

It is a technique that creates various decorations and designs on surfaces such as leather, metal, fabric, or paper. This is how relief is created.

The process itself involves pressing two plates towards the surface of the chosen material. Instead of creating an imprint, however, the relief on the plates lifts the surface, adding an extra dimension.

Embossing is a process that creates elegance, changing the nature of the used material. In most cases, this technique sets a new standard of product quality compared to many other printing methods.

The embossing technique makes ordinary things more beautiful and special. Even the simplest or dullest paper could turn into a beautiful piece of art with the help of embossing.

 Types of Embossing

As mentioned, stamping is a special procedure in which the surface of the paper is pushed forward to create a raised image.

Now, let’s look at the several different types of embossing that can be achieved:

  • Blind Embossing – this technique is not printed with foil or over a printed image. The color is the same as the surface color. It can also be called color relief or standalone embossing.
  • Registered Embossing – a relief image is registered exactly next to a foil stamp or printed image.
  • Single-level Embossing - where the image area is raised to one flat level.
  • Multi-level Embossing - where the image area is raised at multiple levels of different heights. This gives the image relief, adds texture, and makes it more interesting.
  • Sculptured Embossing - a process where the work is done by hand. It has varying levels of depth to make the image multi-dimensional and realistic.
  • Printed Embossing - where the relief area is registered with a printed image.
  • Toned Embossing - a new creation where pastel or pearl is used during the process. This methodology is the same as other types of stamping, but currently, the technique is in high demand.
  • Combined Embossing - the technique where the relief image is printed with foil.
  • Glazing - a process of polished relief coating. Glazing has become a popular trend and technique on darker colored goods. The pressure and heat are significantly increased when pressing the die.

This pressure helps add the gloss that glazing offers. To change the color, lighter colored papers can be scorched using a higher temperature. This allows for great design contrasts, as long as it’s done correctly.
  • Debossing - where the surfaces are pressed in, instead of being raised, as with traditional embossing.

Application and Purpose

Relatively inexpensive, the embossing technique has a variety of applications. It is widely used in the industry, for aesthetic purposes and functional applications.

Embossing can be found on credit cards, Braille books, wedding invitations, stationery and more. There are also industries that use embossing on packaging to make their products more appealing.

Now, we will list some of the industries that often use this stamping technique for their products:

Cosmetic Industry

The cosmetic industry tends to use the method for relief application on their product packaging. One reason is that the appearance of stamping creates a luxurious look that appeals to most buyers, even if the product isn’t as expensive as it looks.

Music Industry

Many artists in the music industry also use stamping for their CD covers. This helps the artist appear more established in the music industry, even if they are just starting out.

Technology Industry

Some technology industries that sell mobile phone accessories, might also use the stamping method to create a more aesthetically appealing look and feel. Some of the main mobile phone covers sold worldwide contain a relief image.

How to Do Embossing Ourselves?

  1. Take a sheet of paper, the desired stamp, an acrylic block, and embossing ink
  2. Dip the stamp into the embossing ink and stamp the paper.
  3. Shake the embossing powder bottle before use, so you remove anything settled at the bottom
  4. Sprinkle the powder over the embossed figure you made. Tilt it several times in all directions to distribute the powder over all parts of the stamped figure
  5. Turn the sheet upside down and tap to remove excess powder
  6. Point the heat tool at the figure and be careful not to burn yourself. If necessary, you can use tweezers to hold the paper. Typically, these tools are powerful, so do not keep the heat stream on the image for too long to avoid melting it
