Coated Plastic Beads for Jewellery and Accessories
Coated plastic beads are acrylic beads with an additional surface layer applied on top. The coating changes not only the appearance but also the feel of the bead. It can be smooth and glossy, soft and velvety, or rough to the touch depending on what has been applied to the surface.
Coated beads are a type of plastic and acrylic beads, distinguished by their varied surface finishes. They are suitable for bracelets, necklaces and accessories where you want texture and tactile interest, not just colour.
What to consider when choosing
The most important question is where the beads will be used. Because the coating sits on the surface, it can wear down due to friction and moisture. For everyday bracelets, stick to smoother and more durable coatings. For decorative, gift or seasonal pieces, matte, rubberised or velvety effects work well — though best used as accents rather than throughout the whole piece.
A mistake beginners often make: applying strong adhesive directly onto a coated bead. Some glues can cloud or alter the surface finish. The fix: test on one bead first and use as little adhesive as possible.
Types of coating you will find
Rubberised (soft-touch) coating. A soft, velvety layer with a matte surface that feels pleasant to the touch. Delivers rich, saturated colour with no shine. You will find a similar effect in resin plastic beads.
Lacquered coating. A thin gloss layer that deepens the colour and gives a wet, shiny look. Generally, the most durable of the coatings listed here.
UV coating. A clear protective layer; it also adds extra shine. Some UV-coated models react to direct sunlight — check the product description for the specific item.
Rough and flocked coatings. Textural finishes — rough is rough to the touch, while flocked resembles fine velour or felt. A good choice when you want the bead to stand out through its surface rather than its colour alone.
What they are used for
Coated beads work well as textural accents in bracelets and necklaces, where mixing smooth and matte or velvety surfaces on a single strand adds depth and interest. They are also a practical choice for larger statement pieces and hanging designs where metal beads would add too much weight — the lightweight acrylic core keeps everything comfortable to wear. They add detail and rich colour to thematic and seasonal accessories without making the piece heavy.
What to combine them with
For bracelets, elastic cord is the most practical base — it needs no clasp and avoids exposing the coating to friction inside a metal finding. For a polished look, try combining different coatings within the same colour family — for example, a rubberised bead next to a lacquered one in the same shade. The variation comes from the surface rather than the colour, and the result feels considered rather than random.

What is the difference between a coated bead and a solid bead?
In a solid-colour bead, the colour runs through the entire material. In a coated bead, the effect arises from a thin surface layer. That surface layer is what gives coated beads their distinctive look and feel — rubberised, lacquered, rough or flocked — but it also means they benefit from a little more care around friction and sharp edges.
Which coating holds up best?
Lacquered coating is generally the most durable under everyday friction — it is a smooth, dense layer. Rubberised and flocked finishes are softer, so they wear off faster. UV coating is a protective layer and also holds up reasonably well.
Will the coating peel over time?
With normal wear, a good-quality coating lasts a long time. Wear tends to appear first around the hole, where the cord runs through. To extend its life, avoid harsh cosmetics, solvents, and heavy friction, and take the jewelry off before applying perfume.
Are they suitable for children’s projects?
Lightweight acrylic beads are a practical material for craft activities, but they are not toys. Small beads are a choking hazard for children under 3. When working with children, choose larger elements with a firmly bonded coating and always work under adult supervision.
