Wooden beads for bracelets, jewelry and craft projects
Wooden beads are a lightweight, easy-to-use material for handmade bracelets, necklaces and DIY decoration. They add visible volume without making the finished piece heavy. Their natural surface gives jewelry a warmer, more organic look than glass, plastic or metal. Many wooden beads have a wider hole than other bead types of the same size, so they can often be threaded directly onto cord, yarn or elastic without special tools. This makes them a practical starting point for beginners and a flexible choice for experienced makers who want natural texture, color and softness in their designs.
Types of wooden beads
Round beads are the classic shape — symmetrical, easy to string in even rows, suitable for bracelets and necklaces of various lengths. Cubes add a geometric rhythm and stand out as an accent between round beads. Discs and washers have a hole perpendicular to the flat surface — the bead lies horizontally in the strand and stacks up, which creates a characteristic boho effect. If you want the discs to hang as a dangling accent, pair them with jump rings or connecting elements for jewelry.
Ovals and cylinders work well as spacers between larger elements in multi-strand pieces. Figurines — hearts, flowers, animals — serve as a central accent, and pendants attach directly to an openable metal jump ring using pliers. For projects with children, children’s figurines are a good choice, and wooden plates with text are a popular pick for personalized martenitsi (traditional Bulgarian red-and-white spring charms) and gift bracelets.
Wooden beads are available in natural color and painted — white, pink, red, green, purple and many other shades. When choosing a combination, keep the finish in mind: a matte surface absorbs light and the color appears more saturated; a glossy surface reflects, and the color appears brighter — a difference especially visible with red and blue. Slight variations in shade are possible depending on the batch, the wood’s natural color, and your screen settings.
Many wooden beads are made from light, even-grained woods such as birch or linden — materials with a smooth surface, good paint absorption and significantly less weight compared to ceramic or metal beads. The difference is most noticeable on long multi-strand necklaces.
What they’re used for
The most common uses are bracelets, necklaces and earrings in boho, ethnic and everyday styles. Wood is light and doesn’t heat up on the skin — necklaces made from it are comfortable to wear even on hot summer days. It combines well with leather cords, lava stones and metal accents. Styling balance: one necklace and one or two bracelets are enough — any more risks weighing down the look.
For Christmas and Easter decoration, unfinished figurines can be painted or decoupaged directly — the wooden surface takes acrylic paint well, and two thin coats of acrylic varnish at the end help the color last longer.
Project idea: For a men’s necklace, wooden beads pair well with dark beads, cord or sturdy string, and a metal pendant.
How to choose
Size and shape
For bracelets, 8–10 mm round beads are the most comfortable choice — they string easily and don’t weigh down the wrist. For necklaces, you can use larger beads of 10–14 mm, or combine round beads with ovals, cylinders and discs. For children’s projects, lighter, round beads and figurines are more practical because they don’t pull the cord down.
Hole size
The hole size determines what cord you can work with — here’s a quick reference:
- 0.8 mm silicone elastic → 1.5 mm hole is enough
- 1–1.5 mm cotton cord → 2 mm recommended
- Thick cord, yarn or double strand → choose beads with a hole of 3 mm and above
Practical tip: For a bracelet with an inside circumference of 18 cm and 10 mm round beads, you’ll need about 18–20 beads. Hole sizes are approximate and may vary by specific model, shape and batch — check the product description before ordering, especially for a double strand.
Natural or painted
Beads in their natural color show visible wood grain and a warmer, handmade feel. Painted beads are more uniform and fit more easily into color combinations. If you plan to paint them yourself, choose unpainted ones — acrylic adheres more evenly on an untreated surface. Pre-sanding isn’t necessary on standard linden or birch beads; for rougher surfaces, a light pass with fine sandpaper (No. 220) before painting gives a cleaner result.
After choosing the beads, the next step is cord or string — see the jewelry and stringing accessories section for the full range.
What to combine them with
Leather cords from the leather and suede cords section are the classic match — wood and leather share a similar warmth of tone and together create a distinctive boho and eco look. Natural stones such as lava, hematite or turquoise add weight and color contrast — lava stones especially work well next to lighter wooden round beads. Metal clasps and jump rings from the metal jewelry accessories section finish the project securely and cleanly.
A finished project usually needs three things: wooden beads, the right cord or elastic, and a finishing element such as a clasp, jump ring or spacer. That way, you can prepare the whole set for a bracelet or necklace in a single order.
Why EM ART
At EM ART, we select wooden beads not only by shape and color, but also by practical details that affect the finished project — evenness of the hole, smoothness of the surface, stability of the paint, and compatibility with various cords and accessories. This matters because an off-center hole can twist the strand, and an uneven surface or weak finish shows quickly on bracelets and necklaces.
You can combine the beads with cords, clasps, metal accessories, pendants and natural stones from the same store, which makes preparing the whole project easier.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wash a wooden bead bracelet?
No — wood absorbs moisture and can crack or warp out of shape, and painted beads fade when wet. Clean with a soft cotton cloth on dry beads only. Avoid contact with hand cream — the oily residue can permanently darken the surface.
How do I attach a wooden pendant to a cord?
Pendants with a ready jump ring attach to an openable metal jump ring, which you close with flat-nose pliers — no soldering required. For pendants without a ring, run the cord directly through the hole and secure with a double surgical knot on both sides to prevent slipping during wear.
Are wooden beads suitable for children?
Wooden beads are small parts and aren’t suitable for children under 3 years old due to choking hazard. For children’s projects and classroom activities, use larger children’s wooden figurines and work only under adult supervision.
How do I paint wooden beads at home?
Apply a thin coat of acrylic paint with a brush, let it dry for 20–30 minutes, then apply a second coat if needed. A finish with water-based acrylic varnish — matte or gloss — protects the color from wear during use. Don’t use oil paint — it dries too slowly and can clog the hole.
