Festive Easter Decoration

Easter is one of the greatest holidays for Christians. It dates back over 2,000 years and marks one of the most important events in the Christian Church – the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

For Christians, this fulfills the biblical prophecy of the Messiah who rises from the dead and grants eternal life in heaven to those who believe in Him.

It is said that the wandering nomadic and Thracian tribes were among the first to celebrate it, marking the arrival of spring and the awakening of nature.

A bit later, with the advent of Christianity, the holiday became associated with the Resurrection of Jesus Christ – the Son of God. The week before Easter is called Holy Week, named so because the Old Bulgarian word "strast", which means suffering.

Easter itself falls on a different date each year, determined by the first day of Holy Week, which aligns with the first full moon of spring.

The holiday begins at the end of Lent – a 40-day period of fasting and repentance, culminating during Holy Week. This week commemorates the biblical events surrounding Jesus’ persecution, crucifixion, and death.

According to the New Testament, Jesus was conceived miraculously and was foretold to be both the Son of God and the King of the Jews. He was known as a leader who inspired the masses, a miracle worker, and a defender of the poor. His closest disciples were from humble backgrounds.

However, Jesus’ growing popularity led to conflicts with Roman authorities and religious leaders who disagreed with His teachings. This hostility peaked when Jesus triumphantly entered Jerusalem, greeted by a crowd of followers who laid palm branches in His path.

During a supper with His disciples, later known as the Last Supper, Jesus predicted His betrayal and invited everyone to eat bread and drink wine.

After the supper, Jesus was arrested. Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, had decided to betray Him to Jewish priests for 30 pieces of silver. (This occurred on Maundy Thursday).

Jesus was sentenced and brutally tortured. When the crowd turned against Him, Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, agreed to issue a death sentence. Jesus was crucified (nailed to the cross alive) – the most common execution method for criminals at that time.

He died and was buried (on Good Friday) in a tomb, where His body remained throughout the following day (Holy Saturday). When mourners returned to the tomb on Sunday, they found it empty.

Jesus had risen. This day is celebrated as Easter (The Great Day).

Christians celebrate Easter in various ways:

Protestants – with sunrise services, Easter vigils, ancient liturgies, and baptisms, celebrating the night of Holy Saturday, among others. Members of the Eastern Orthodox Church also observe Easter but 13 days later than other Christians, as their religion follows the Julian calendar.

A Brief History of the Holiday and Some Legends

This holiday is known to have a long pagan history, dating back to ancient spring festivals associated with the change of natural cycles.

In the 2nd century, Christians associated it with the spring goddess Eostre festival. According to a distant legend, the spring goddess could transform into a hare, which is where the Easter bunny symbol originates.

Another legend tells of the fertility goddess creating an extraordinary hare that could lay one egg per year.
