Shining Lame
If someone asked you to draw their portrait or a landscape, what would be the first thing you’d reach for? Pastels? Colored pencils? Markers? Chalk? Watercolors? These are probably the drawing tools that come to mind.
But what about yarn and a needle? Yes, you can draw with them too! Creating art with threads and yarn can take many different forms, resulting in a truly unique and beautiful work of art.
String art has a long history. Hundreds of years ago, in medieval Europe, the walls of wealthy homes were adorned with large tapestries featuring beautiful images.
Some of these were part of large pictures made up of hundreds of pieces. These works of string art told great stories and were known as tapestries.
Tapestries were valuable works of art because they could be easily moved and displayed in many places. They could also be incorporated into pillows, blankets, and chairs.
Additionally, many different colors of thread can be used for tapestries. Threads can be blended and layered in three dimensions. These unique features make them look original and distinguishable from other art forms.
However, creating string art is not easy. After all, you can’t simply erase a mistake. String artists are highly skilled in using tools such as:
- needles,
- thread,
- cord
- yarn
Many string artworks look hand drawn with a pencil.
Have you ever seen a tapestry? Do you want to create your own string art? It’s never too late to start a new hobby!
From any thread, yarn, lame, and various threads, you can create unique and interesting jewelry, scarves, accessories, and home decor items making your home a more special and cozy place.
Some String Art Ideas from EM ART
Yarn Bird
To make a yarn bird, you’ll need:
- Yarn in colors of your choice
- A piece of paper
- Wire
- Scissors
- A piece of cardboard, 12 cm long
- Electrical tape
Wrap two of the colors around the short side of the cardboard, for example, red on the long side of the cardboard, then cut one side. This way, you create strands of equal length. Make a ball of paper by simply crumpling it with your hand.
It’s best to use newspaper or a magazine. Insert the paper ball into the bundle of yarn where your bird’s body will be.
Comb the yarn strands to ensure there are no bent strands, then trim with scissors. Once your yarn bird is ready, it’s time to make the legs and beak, which you can shape from wire and then wrap with black tape, like electrical tape.
After forming the legs, insert the wire into the paper ball by carefully spreading the yarn at the belly. Then attach the beak. Finally, add eyes; you can use ready-made eyes or buttons.
That’s it! With some patience and imagination, you can easily make a yarn bird. If you use yellow tones, you can make small, cute chicks.
Tassel from Yarn and Toilet Paper Rolls
Try this easy technique to make a fluffy tassel out of yarn and toilet paper rolls.
First, place two rolls side by side. Start wrapping the yarn around them in the middle, securing the loose end between the rolls. Wrap it many times to make the tassel thick and fluffy.
Next, take another piece of yarn and tie it tightly around the middle of the wrapped yarn between the two rolls. Tie a secure knot. Carefully slide the wrapped yarn off the rolls. Now tie it tightly again in the middle to keep all the strands in place. Carefully cut the outer folded edges of the yarn bundle with sharp scissors.
Be careful with your fingers when trimming the ends with scissors!
Tassel out of Cardboard Circles
To make a tassel out of cardboard circles, you can use cardboard from an empty box to make tassels of any size. The larger the rings, the larger the tassel will be.
Unfold the empty box, place a round object inside, trace it, and cut out two circles. Place a coin in the center of the circles and trace it with a pencil.
Then hold the two circles together and cut a small wedge-shaped slot from the outside to the center, then cut out the inner circle. Start wrapping the yarn around the rings many times—the thicker the wrap, the denser and fluffier the tassel will be.
Once you’ve wrapped enough yarn around the rings, insert the scissors between the cardboard circles and begin cutting only the ends. Ensure that no yarn pieces fall out of the center hole.
With a longer piece of yarn, carefully wrap and tie it through the center of the bundle, between the cardboard rings. Tie as tightly as possible, then remove the rings and fluff and shape your tassel.
Once you’ve mastered these techniques and learned how to make a yarn tassel, you can create a bunch of fluffy balls. Use your imagination to create different versions. Tie several tassels together to make caterpillars, or stack them on top of each other to create different shapes.
Gift for a Loved One
To surprise a loved one, you don’t need much time or materials. All you need is to learn a few tips on making souvenirs and prepare the necessary materials. For example, make a great out of paper, threads, candy, flowers. It’s the perfect handmade gift for special occasions. Here’s a creative idea from EM ART - make a beautiful heart using shimmering metallic threads.
What You’ll Need:
- 2-3 colors of threads
- Heart-shaped balloon
- Petroleum jelly
- Glue
- Decorative ribbons (various colors)
- Decorations (decorative butterflies, beads, sequins, etc.)
How to Make It:
First, inflate the heart-shaped balloon. Then coat it with a thin layer of petroleum jelly. Apply glue over it and carefully start winding lame threads around the balloon. If necessary, you can apply an additional layer of glue as you wind the threads.
Hang the balloon to dry for a day. Once the glue is dry, pop the balloon and remove it with a crochet hook through one of the holes in the hardened threads. Finally, decorate the heart as you wish and give it to your loved one when the time is right.
